Chinese sizes (GB/T 1335 号型)
Chinese factories label size as height/chest + body type for tops (e.g. 170/88A) and height/waist + body type for bottoms (e.g. 170/76A). Height runs in 5 cm steps, chest in 4 cm steps and waist in 2 cm steps. The body type comes from chest minus waist: men Y 17–22 cm, A 12–16, B 7–11, C 2–6; women Y 19–24 cm, A 14–18, B 9–13, C 4–8. The tool above works this out for each person.
Sizing questions
Where do the body measurements come from?
From regression models we fitted to ANSUR II, the public 2012 US Army anthropometric survey of about 4,000 men and 2,000 women. Given height and weight, the model predicts chest, waist, hip, neck, shoulder width, sleeve and inseam. Typical error is shown next to each number: about ±3–4 cm for chest, ±3 cm for hips and ±2 cm for sleeve and inseam. The survey population is fitter than the US average, so for very heavy or very light builds a tape measure is better.
How do I convert US sizes to UK, EU, Japanese, Korean or Chinese sizes?
Women's US numeric sizes convert by fixed steps: UK is US + 4, EU is US + 30, France is US + 32, Italy is US + 36, Japan is US + 3, and Korea uses 44/55/66/77/88. Men's tops follow chest size: EU and Italian jacket sizes are about half the chest in centimetres, Korea uses chest in centimetres in 5 cm steps, and Japanese letter sizes usually run one size smaller than US. Brands vary, so check each garment chart.
What does a Chinese size like 170/88A mean?
It is the GB/T 1335 号型 code used by Chinese factories: 170 is height in cm (5 cm steps), 88 is chest in cm for tops (4 cm steps) or waist for bottoms (2 cm steps), and the letter Y, A, B or C is the body type from the chest-to-waist difference. A is the most common. We show A unless you enter tape-measured chest and waist.
How accurate is a size from height and weight?
A good starting point, not a guarantee: people with the same height and weight vary. If you can, measure chest, natural waist and hips with a tape and enter them; the tool then uses your numbers instead of estimates. Always compare with the garment chart before approving the proof.
How do I measure my head for a cap?
Wrap a soft tape about 1 cm (half an inch) above the eyebrows and ears, across the forehead and around the fullest part of the back of the head. No tape? Use string and a ruler. Our A01 cap is one size with an adjustable strap for about 56–60 cm (22–23.6 in).
Can I size a whole team and send it to production?
Yes. Paste one person per line with name, height, weight and M or W. You get each person's size and measurements, size totals, and a CSV with English and Chinese column names that we can pass straight to the factory.
Data: body measurements are estimated with models DYEWAVE fitted to the public ANSUR II anthropometric survey (US Army, 2012). Jacket and leggings sizes use the factory fit guides on the jackets and leggings pages.
